The Saint & Sinner is a new bespoke, and vibrant pub for St Albans. Working with our client we have transformed a previous Nationwide building society branch into a stylish pub and restaurant bursting with charm and historical features. Built in the 1760’s, previously described as a “country house in town”, The Saint & Sinner resides in the grade II listed building that was once home to John Osborn – three times mayor of St Albans. Now reimagined as the ultimate destination venue, with character in abundance, perfect at any time of day or evening.
The concept of the pub has been based on the new name and branding that we created, 'the Saint & Sinner', reflecting the dual aspects of the location. During the day, the 'Saint' aspect of the pub comes into its own, with customers ordering food in a light-hearted and airy environment. 'Saint' is also a nod to the city of St. Albans, and its history. By night, the 'Sinner' aspect is shown, with a more drinks-based "high energy" atmosphere.
The name and branding influence the finishes inside, with a dark and moody bar area being where the sinners hang out – showcasing red neon lighting and feature light fittings to help create a wicked mood. Throughout the site we used reclaimed and upcycled church memorabilia, from alters, to artwork, chairs to pews, all were incorporated to add authenticity to the dressing and finishing touches. In the lighter cocktail bar area more angelic pieces have been chosen along with specialist artwork depicting the Virgin Mary, which all pull through the lighter and airier - saintly vibes.
Both saint and sinner areas are completed with decadent traditional dressings – heavy swagged curtains, rich fabrics, bold patterns and faux planting. The whole pub oozes understated elegance which the beautiful old building laps up. A far cry from its previous use as a building society branch!
The private dining room, also known as The Chamber, is on the first floor giving our client flexibility to host conferences, dinner parties or special occasions. This was an essential functional element of the pub's design and gives another reason to visit by attracting guests looking for a more personal and intimate experience.
The pub is also complimented by a new courtyard, as well as, private party / dining / meeting rooms, shuffleboard games … and when the lights go down, the tempo goes up!
