The Pier House is a charming inn with guest accommodation that sits along Charlestown’s historic Georgian harbour, famous for its Tall Ships that have appeared in many films and TV series. This inn, brimming with unique and quirky features, is topped off with a sea-facing bar, complete with a sun trap outdoor seating area, which makes for some fantastic views.
Working with St Austell, this venue has been returned to its former glory, just in time for the summer months, after a fire forced the grade II listed property to close due to damage. The pub has been sensitively restored and focused on highlighting natural beauty, inside and outside the Pier house, following the blaze. Features of the much-loved venue have been kept, such as exposed beams and nooks showing off the original fabric of the building. Within the design, there are a lot of subtle ‘nods’ to the structure of boats, and a really considered use of materials that act as a link between this building and the history of the local area.
The number of guest rooms has been reduced from 27 to 23 to make the most of the downstairs area, opening up the bar space to have direct access to the terrace and sea views, making the pub and hotel more open-plan and spacious. The bedrooms have received a huge makeover, with the introduction of new textures and materials to reflect the beautiful surroundings. Each room is curated with luxury in mind, serving as the perfect home away from home to make the very most of your stay in wonderful Charlestown.
Having watched this project develop from its infancy to the fantastic conclusion we reached this week, I must thank your team for their hard work, Guy and Sally for their inspiration and everyone involved for the result we have collectively achieved.
In my time I have taken responsibility for many capital projects, none as adventurous and technically sensitive as this one. I can honestly say that this one ranks as the least stressful and most rewarding to date. The thought that Guy and Sally have put into the details that will stand out for our customers, and the hard work that you, John and his team have put into bringing it all together have been magnificent, resulting in a stunning scheme.
