The White Hart Hotel is a charming 16th-century coaching inn located in the heart of Lewes High Street. The Grade-II listed Georgian townhouse exudes a wealth of history and character. Back in 1737, it was even the local pub for the political philosopher, Thomas Paine, and those with an eye for detail will spot the ‘TP’ initials on the ornate fireplace by the bar and in the photographs of the inn from over the years dotted throughout.
Working with Heartwood Inns and the main contractor, we’ve lovingly designed the hotel to restore its former glory, blending period charm with modern comfort.
Inside, you'll find many of the original features still intact, from the oak beams and Tudor stone fireplaces, to the oak panelling and high corniced ceilings. The bar retains its original panelled walls and a cosy open fireplace, offering a warm and inviting atmosphere. With the addition of an orangery and roof terrace that overlooks the South Downs, four spectacular lower ground suites known as Luxe bedrooms, 19 further delightful bedrooms, a large dining room, and a welcoming bar with characteristic snugs and original open fireplaces for all to enjoy, this really is a hidden gem in Lewes.
