Formerly known as The Cross Keys, The High Horse marks a bold new chapter for this much-loved Arkell’s pub in Newbury. Taken over by Dodo Pub Co, this is their tenth pub and a unique collaboration between the two companies, with Arkell’s Brewery remaining the pub’s main supplier.
The building has undergone a full refurbishment to reflect its new name while preserving its heritage. Original features such as fireplaces, stained glass windows and exposed brick walls have been carefully retained, while the layout around the bar has been opened up to create easier access and a fresh, welcoming vibe for the local community.
True to Dodo’s signature style, shipping containers have been repurposed into quirky outdoor hangouts in the garden area, adding a playful and distinctive stamp to the space. The result is a venue that combines character and comfort with a new energy that celebrates both its history and its future. As with all their pubs, Dodo’s mission is to create spaces that bring neighbourhoods together and showcase the power pubs have to do just that. This venue is no exception.
